Resumen

El océano es una fuente muy importante de recursos naturales vivos, cuya explotación en los últimos 50 años ha producido una expansión de la actividad pesquera como nunca antes se había producido. Actualmente la pesquería de recursos marinos produce alrededor de 90 millones de toneladas por año, lo que corresponde a más del 80% de la producción pesquera global. Las capturas han incrementado debido a la creciente demanda de alimento de una población humana que crece en forma acelerada, sumado al proceso de mejoramiento tecnológico en las capacidades de captura. En algunos casos este proceso ha conducido al colapso de muchas pesquerías, generando reducción de empleo.
