Abstract

Introduction: The initial lesion of dental caries is the first clinical manifestation of dental caries produced by a loss of enamel minerals. There are different brands of fluoride varnishes that favor dental remineralization and prevent the progression of the lesion. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of two protocols and two commercial brands of fluoride varnish for remineralization of initial caries lesions. Materials and Methods: Experimental, double-blind study with two parallel control groups. The sample consisted of 68 teeth with initial caries lesion according to ICDAS II criteria (01 and 02) and with a degree of demineralization between 13-24nm according to DIAGNOdent pen®. Two brands of 0.5 % fluoride varnish (Clinpro and Duraphat) were used with two application protocols and 6 controls were performed in each. The results were tabulated using Microsoft Word Excel and the Levene’s statistical test and T-test were used using SPSS software. Results: All groups showed a decrease over time in the degree of demineralization of the initial caries lesions. In five of the six controls the Sig (p-value) was greater than p= 0.05 showing that there is no significant difference between the brands. The final difference between protocols was 16 (50.0 %) remineralized teeth for protocol A and 12 (31.57 %) teeth for protocol B. Conclusions: The application of fluoride varnish favored remineralization over time, but there was no significant difference in effectiveness between both protocols and brands of fluoride varnish
