Anticommunism in the theses of the Faculty of Jurisprudence and Social Sciences of the UES (1889-1907)

The production of theses carried out in the Faculty of Jurisprudence and Social Sciences between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, one of the academic research problems was communism. Some degree-seeking students aimed to demonstrate in their theses that communism was not viable in El Salvador. In this article, we have included four theses by the students Francisco Guevara, Cecilio Bustamante, Secundino Turcios, and Enrique Cañas. All of them defend private property and conceive of communism as inapplicable to a society like the Salvadoran one. In some cases, such as that of Turcios, although he does not believe in the applicability of communism, he introduces a proposal in his thesis to carry out a social reform that improves the living conditions of workers. Anticommunism in El Salvador emerged very early, long before Marxist ideas were disseminated, which arrived in the Central American region after the Russian and Mexican revolutions.
