A brief account of the economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Venezuela

Abstract

Since 1999, with the arrival of Hugo Chávez to the presidency of Venezuela, political relations have been involved in an increasing imposition of sanctions that have affected the Venezuelan local environment. These sanctions respond to the interests of the United States, which have the intention of determining the political and diplomatic processes to be followed by countries according to their geopolitical interests, which has led to confrontation between both nations. The purpose of this article is to give an account of the economic sanctions unilaterally imposed by the United States as part of its policy as a declining power. It also seeks to show the way in which these sanction measures have been developed at different times from 2014 to 2022. A qualitative study of bibliographic review is used to enable a systematic and critical analysis in relation to the topic. The conclusions reflect on the turning point that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine represents for Venezuela by placing it once again in the geopolitical chess. An analysis is made regarding the approach of the US Treasury Department with Venezuela to negotiate a relative lifting or relaxation of the sanctions given the prohibition to buy energy resources such as gas and oil from Russia
