Pedro Luis Sotolongo Codina and the Construction of a Complex Rationality for the 21st Century

This article examines the intellectual contribution of Pedro Luis Sotolongo Codina to the development of complexity sciences and complex thinking in Latin America and the Caribbean, establishing a theoretical dialogue with the work of Edgar Morin and other leading scholars in the field. Through a critical review of key concepts associated with complexity—uncertainty, emergence, self-organization, transdisciplinarity, adaptive complex systems, and complex causality—the paper analyzes how these perspectives contribute to understanding contemporary challenges. It argues that complexity constitutes a new scientific rationality capable of overcoming the limitations of the reductionist and fragmented paradigm inherited from modernity. The article also explores the implications of complexity thinking for education, ethics, and leadership in societies characterized by accelerated change and increasing global interdependence. Finally, it highlights the continuing relevance of Sotolongo’s legacy in shaping a Latin American and Caribbean approach to complex thinking committed to social transformation, dialogue among forms of knowledge, and the education of new generations of scholars
