Abstract

This study addresses the historical and sociological process of urban segregation that occurred in a series of urban-popular neighborhoods of the Central Canton of San José in the period from 1950 to 1980. The symbolic categorization of the so-called “Barrios del sur” is studied, through the analysis of the way in which some processes of inequality and urban exclusion intensified in said population sectors
