Natural resources are coming under increased pressure from contamination over time. Keeping their conditions uncontaminated is a challenge in order to preserve them for present and future generations. Environmental degradation has caused water resources to be strongly impacted, so this process can lead to the degradation of ecosystems and a corresponding decrease in the quality of life, with high economic and social costs. Rivers become one of the resources that have suffered a severe deterioration due to human pressure that is increasingly tending to be greater. In order to know the presence of families and species of fish, a study was carried out during February, March and April 2016 in a part of the channel of the Titihuapa River, which is located in the departments of Cabañas and San Vicente of El Salvador and has a length of 50.36 kilometers, its waters flow into the Reservoir of La Presa 5 de Noviembre. The objective of this work was to estimate the fish populations at different sampling sites. The field study lasted three months (February, March and April 2016), using non-destructive sampling. The results show the limited quantities both in number of individuals and of species found during the three months that the study lasted, a total of 9 species and 4 families of fish were found. The family with the highest number of species was Cichlidae with 4 species, followed by Poeciliidae with 3 and Characidae and Ariidae with one species each. Similarly, it was found that the most abundant fish species were Poeciliopsis pleurospilus (guatopote), Amatitlania nigrofasciata (burrita), Heterandria anzuetoy (chimbolo) and Astyanax aeneus (plateada). The presence of Contracaecum sp. Parasites was identified. in the fish species Ariopsis guatemalensis and Heterandria anzuetoi. An important finding was that high populations of the bird known locally as Pato Chancho or cormorant of the Phalacrocorax brasilianus species were observed, which is related by various authors to the Contraecum sp parasite, at the same time it was possible to corroborate its presence of said parasite in the organism of some fish
