Abstract

The roots of the "red mangrove" Rhizophora mangle, remain submerged most of the time, provide the perfect habitat for a great
variety of benthic organisms that form part of the food chains that sustain artisanal fishing; they also contribute to the formation of dissolved organic matter that fertilizes the soil of the mangroves and estuarine waters.
