Humanization in the Intensive Care Unit is a current need given the evidence of better results in the evolution of users. Humanized care in Intensive Care Units is crucial today. As ICUs have evolved, they have provided hope and opportunities to those who previously died primarily due to epidemics such as polio in the 1950s. However, technological advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases has not always translated into a comprehensive and human approach to care. The importance of humanization in ICUs is described here: Historical context: ICUs emerged to treat serious and critical diseases. Over time, they have managed to reduce mortality and increase survival rates. Current challenges: Despite technological advances, the development of non-technical skills in the health team (such as communication, empathy and compassion) has not been equally prioritized. Patients and their families long for comprehensive and humane care, especially in the stressful context of ICU hospitalization. Humanization: It implies considering the person as a unique being, preserving their dignity and values. It also includes the family as a fundamental part of the care process. Multidimensional approach: within it is communication: Promote effective communication skills between the medical team, patients and families, participation: involve patients and their families in decision making, self-care: Encourage rest, adequate nutrition and exercise, resilience: Helping patients and their families cope with the crisis of ICU hospitalization. Humanization in ICUs is an essential process to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to those who need it most.
