Humanizing care in the intensive care unit from a nursing perspective, with a focus on care for pregnant and postpartum women

The letter to the editor seeks to highlight the urgent need to humanize care in intensive care units (ICUs) focused on pregnant women and postpartum women. To support this position, evidence from Latin America on the implementation of humanized care strategies and the specific challenges faced by nursing staff in this context was analyzed. The letter emphasizes the need to: 1) strengthen staff training for the humanization of care for pregnant and postpartum women, 2) promote institutional policies that favor person-centered practices, and 3) highlight the importance of comprehensive maternal care, especially in critical settings such as the ICU. It is concluded that humanizing care in these units is essential to ensuring safer, higher quality, and warmer care, and thereby to achieving optimal standards of care for this vulnerable population.
