Introduction: This article examines the implementation of the Nursing Care Process (NCP) in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), highlighting that nursing care plans are essential for critically ill patients. Nursing, as a discipline focused on continuous care, ensures 24-hour attention and support. Objective: To demonstrate that the NCP is an essential scientific tool for professional practice in ICUs, as it allows for a comprehensive assessment (physical, mental, and social) of critically ill patients and guarantees standardised, high-quality care. Methodology: A systematic literature review was carried out, focusing on scientific publications from 2000 to 2024. Original studies were selected from databases such as MEDLINE/PubMed, Elsevier, and SciELO. Inclusion criteria were based on thematic relevance (implementation of the NCP in ICUs), methodological rigour, and scientific validity. Results and Discussion: In El Salvador, only three models have been adopted for the implementation of the NCP. However, the reviewed studies indicate several limitations to its application. Conclusion: The implementation of the NCP in critical care areas improves the quality of care provided to patients, establishing nursing as the science of human care. Keywords: Assessment, Planning, Nursing Diagnoses, Nursing Interventions, Nursing Care.
