Abstract

This work addresses the epistemological problem of knowledge concerning divinity and life after death, from the perspective of Nahuatl philosophy, with the aim of establishing the existence of an advanced epistemological awareness in Nahuatl thought. For this purpose, epistemological categories are confronted with the explicit features of Nahuatl philosophy. First, the evolution of Nahuatl philosophy as interpreted by non-indigenous authors is described, which comes to question its own postulates on transcendence and existence; in other words, it constitutes a critique of its own metaphysics. Second, the inherent characteristics of the internal transformation of Nahuatl philosophy are interpreted, as it departs from its primordial dogmatism while attempting to avoid skepticism. This ultimately implies that this philosophy developed methods and criteria to validate its knowledge, which in turn serves as an indicator of the application of logic in philosophical inquiry. Finally, it is identified that there was a theory of knowledge that transcended naïve realism without falling into metaphysical skepticism, along with a method to overcome it.
