This scientific essay aims to shed new light on a scarcely explored episode in diplomatic history: the official relations between Manchukuo and El Salvador. The almost nine-year period of diplomatic relations began with the recognition of the Manchu regime by El Salvador in 1934. This fact itself was the most significant event in the bilateral relations, as it broke the international isolation suffered by the puppet state. This research examines the possible causes of this unexpected recognition, as well as into the international response to it, especially from Japan, China, the United States and the League of Nations. Then, the other events in the bilateral relationship during the following years are documented and analyzed. In addition, the failed initiatives to deepen relations are explored, including a draft treaty that was canceled and the brief establishment of direct consular relations. The investigation concludes by analyzing the end of relations with El Salvador’s declaration of war against Japan, after Pearl Harbor, and the non-recognition of Manchukuo in January 1943.
