Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is a worldwide public health problem. Cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) have been identified, which may appear isolated, or combined in the definition of “metabolic syndrome” (MetS). The importance of its screening in the adult population is their susceptibility of being modified through health interventions. The aim of this research is to quantify the prevalence of CVDS, MetS and hyperuricemia in the Faculty of Medicine staff. Patients and methods: Cross sectional design for prevalence, inviting all staff to participate, measuring criteria for: CVRF, MetS and hyperuricemia. Results: There were 207 participants: 108 female and 99 males. The most common CVRF was obesity (adding overweight) with 81.8 %, and low High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) levels with 56.45 %. Prevalence of MetS by Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III was 28.8 % and by JIS 34.78 %. There was a variation of prevalence for men with ATP III (26.26 %) and JIS (38.38 %) dependent on the cutoff point of waist circumference, compared with equal prevalence for women with both definitions (31.48 %). Prevalence for hyperuricemia was 4.8 %. Conclusions: The prevalence of CVRF and MetS are high in the staff population of the Faculty of Medicine University of El Salvador, with a predominance in administrative staff and men
